SUSPENSION / RELAXATION OF BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION OF VEHICLES IN PUNJAB

The Government of Punjab has approved the suspension of biometric verification of vehicles for two months.

 This is really good news for those who could not find the existing owner of the vehicle and had difficulty getting the vehicle transferred in his/her name due to the non-availability of the owner.

the 3rd meeting of the Provincial cabinet of Punjab was held on 04-Nov-2022 in which the agenda item at serial 75 was a relaxation of rule 47 of the Punjab Motor Vehicles Rules 1969 for a period of two months regarding hardship cases of the Biometric Verification system.

The Excise and Taxation Department Punjab launched the biometric verification system in January 2022 for new registration and transfer of ownership of vehicles for both buyers and sellers. The public faced so much difficulty and protested to relax the biometrics for some period so that they might transfer vehicles in their names.

However, only in hardship cases such as, if the vehicle is sold from person to person and 4 times sold without transfer and the current documented owner is out of the country or out of reach, the concerned authority may relax the biometric of that seller only. The buyer has to give biometrics. 

The things would clear what pattern would be used to relax the biometric as the detailed notification is yet to come from Secretary Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department Punjab.
